Donate Blood

Giving just one pint of your blood can help save the lives of three patients, and the entire process of blood donation only takes about an hour.

The donation process is simple. You may be eligible to donate blood if you :

  • are 18 - 60 years old

  • weigh at least 45 kgs

  • are in good health

  • Haemoglobin > 12.5gm/dl

  • DONATION INTERVAL- for whole blood donation once in three months for males and four months for females.

  • You should not have had malaria in the last three months.

  • You should not have had jaundice, typhoid in the last one year.

  • You do not have any of the following: Uncontrolled Thyroid disorders, Diabetes

    Heart disease, cardiovascular diseases or infectious diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B or C, Cancer.

  • You have not had blood transfusion in the last 12 months

Blood

Blood means and includes whole human blood drawn from a donor. It is then mixed with an anti-coagulant. Generally about 350ml of blood is drawn from donor and it take about 45 minutes to 1 hr.

Blood Types

The major types are O, A, B and AB. For a blood donation to be helpful to a patient, there has to be an appropriate match between the blood type of the donor and that of the recipient.

Blood Donation Process

A single donor can save lives of three patients

1.COLLECTION - Blood is collected from each donor. The whole procedure requires about 1 hour.

2.TESTING - The blood is then tested for various diseases to ensure its quality.

3.PREPARATION - Blood donated is processed for component separation.

4.SEPARATION - Components are separated in Packed Red Blood Cells, Fresh Frozen Plasma & Platelets.

5.STORAGE - Each component is transferred to individual bags to be stored in different refrigerators.

Blood Components

Blood has four main components: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. At Somaiya, we specialise in the storing:
